- In 1858, George took over his fathers hide and leather business in New York City and founded of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. He retired to Bridgeport, CT in 1878. George was reputed to be worth 40 million at the time of his death. 'One of his business methods was that each of his 285 stores had to send him a 1 dollar bill each day." His wife died 6 years previous. His obituary was on the front page of the New York Times.
