Colby College graduate, class of 1843. Greek and Latin professor 1858-1872, Greek professor 1872-1893.Graduate of Newton Theological Institution in 1850. Came to Waterville with parents at the age of 6. Engaged in teaching in China, ME and Lexington, MA. John was editor of the Zion's Advocate newspaper in Portland from 1850 to 1858.

Died at age 69 in Mortality Schedule. Per the Foster Family Genealogy, moved from Hanover, NH, to Boston and then to Waterville in 1828. Marriage in Newburyport Vital Records has him 'of Boston'. He is in 1850 census of Waterville with Eunice age 58 born MA and Ann, Mary, Mary Knights age 30 and Delia Conway age 18.

John married Lowell, Elizabeth in C 1820. Elizabeth (daughter of Lowell, Simeon and Wadleigh, Annie) was born in 24-APR-1792 in Salisbury, MA; died in 5-JUL-1826 in probably Newburyport, MA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Elizabeth had first married an Ezekiel Merrill of Showhegan who had died and left her 2 sons. It was said she and her sister Hannah grew up with their parents on Plum Island, MA (off Newburyport) where their parents tended the lighthouse. Elizabeth died in childbirth with a daughter that did not survive. p. 10

Nicholas married Esty, Nancy 'Ann' in 8-JAN-1815 in Winslow, ME. Nancy (daughter of Esty, Edward and Marsh, Mehitable) was born in 14-DEC-1791 in Westmoreland, Cheshire, NH; died in 6-MAR-1867 in Waterville, ME; was buried in Pine Grove Cem., Waterville, ME. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
