- Thomas attended Newport Academy and moved to Boston in 1846 for 5 years. On returning to Newport, ME in 1851 he was postmaster in Newport for 4 years. He was of Boston, MA at marriage. In July 1856 he went to Minnesota and settled a claim of one hundred and sixty acres. He was elected one of the first justices of the peace in 1856 and in 1859 was elected town clerk. Enlisted in 1866 in First Minnesota Volunteers and was with his regiment at the surrender of Lee. GAR 1861-1865. (From History of Dakota Co, MN). Thomas Clarke and Arvesta are in 1860 census of Rosemount with Willis and Thomas born Maine and Martha W. age 3 born MN. They are in 1870 and 1880 censuses of Rosemount, Minnesota with large family. Living children in 1888 were Willis G., Thomas L., Edward F., Lewis H., Benjamin H., Mary R. and Arvesta L.
